Aftermath

this post will remain at the top of the page today -- scroll down for new stuff.

I haven't blogged much since getting home, but like everyone else, I've been following the news. I don't have much to say that so many others haven't already said. The pictures coming out of Gulfport/Biloxi are heartbreaking. A few years back, Nin and I took 10 cross country. We got into Gulfport about 2am, got a motel room, totally unaware of what the place looked like. I woke up, pulled open the curtains, to be greeted by blue skies, a white beach, and palm trees. It was incredibly beautiful.

As I mentioned in the post below, you can donate money through the American Anglican Council.

Funds collected by the AAC will be used for relief assistance and will be channeled at the local level through congregations, chapters, and other individuals and groups associated with the AAC as suddenly as specific needs are identified. We expect AAC efforts to be complementary to the efforts of the Anglican Communion Network, and we will be working in close communication with them.

If you're local here in Monterey, KTOM is running a fundraising drive in the Orchard parking lot in Sand City. They'll be there till 6pm. (As of 445pm they've raised $26,000) And if you want to help the pets, the ASPCA is rasing money here.

Evening Update: According to the FNC reporter just on from the Astrodome, the Red Cross is looking for donations of kid friendly DVDs. Apparently, they're playing movies for the kids there to keep them entertained.

Florida Cracker is holding a matching donation drive for our dear furry friends.

I can imagine that if we had the eco-wackos back in 1900 when that hurricane hit galaston texas they would blame it on horse farts or smoke from all those fireplaces back then

I really believe that when the ice melts at the poles it will turn into water and antarctica and Greenland will be Green again, and so will the deserts. Ice is bigger than water and it floats, so sea level will drop. CO2 makes things green too and is not pollution.

But, pollution is a mess. Oil is not the only source of energy. If it gets too expensive, there are FREE alternatives. Wind power is excellent and ancient technology (like sailboats), look at how much wind there is, you can't even nuke a hurricane. As a technology it makes no pollution. Tidal hydroelectric is also like that. Hybrid cars can run on electricity and compressed air from a windmill. High resistance electronics can make solar powered laptops.

Don't throw away that old windows computer! Install linux on it! Computer junk is pollution!

There is a lot of "hot air" going around why don't we turn it into "free gas"!

There are several explanations as to why super storms occurred before "pollution" - or global warming, the ones they believe to be causing these current storms. The most important thing to do is, try to use alternative energy now. Next, we can't even measure how much pollution happened from the coal-burning, river-dumping times of the industrial revolution. Even with trying to stop the bleeding now, we are still paying for what our ancestors did in the name of industrial advancement a hundred years ago. We still don't know what effect dropping bombs on Iraq years ago, or recently, have done, much less, Hiroshima, and all the South Seas testings done years ago.

Kudos on your efforts to bring relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. There is another way bloggers and other thoughtful people can help:

I have opened forums at www.DisasterReliefIdeas.org for the discussion of ideas to aid disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I am not soliciting donations, only ideas. Experts in aspects of disaster relief (housing, healthcare, rebuilding, etc.) are also able to rate these ideas, giving us a means of identifying the most promising ones, which will be shared with disaster relief professionals and persons in authority. Please help our society by contributing your ideas, especially if you are unable to contribute financially to relief efforts.
