Cheesy

I've lived in Monterey for almost 20 years, but I'd never been to the county fair. Since we now live within walking distance, Nin and I decided to go last night. Our fair brings new meaning to "cheesy". It was pretty pathetic. But I did get my tri-tip sandwich! And that's pretty much all that matters. The other odd thing was the major ag companies like Dole and Tanimura and Antle, competing in the produce competitions. You never saw such amazing boxes of lettuce, cauliflower, carrots, broccoli that was whole, florets, and pre-washed and bagged. Also saw many cute bunnies, goats, cows, and sheep with cute lil jackets.

I loved our county fair. Every year, I would enter muffins and dresses, and we would buy the bracelets and ride the rides. I would always reserve a night to go with my girlfriends so we could ride the zipper, eat junk, and then we would head over to the drive-in for their post-fair show.

Good times. I miss those.

I'm up north of SF, and the vegetable distribution part of community events is *always* the highlight of the day.

That and , the Sonoma-Marin County Fair's "World's Ugliest Dog" contest.

And, they AREN't kidding. This year's winner:

I grew up in a small community that has their own town free fair. We have rides (a Ferris Wheel with the wooden cages or gondolas as the paper puts it, that is 80 years old, games, food stands (run by the Junior & Senior Classes to raise money), and entertainment (live local/area bands) each night. There is the obligatory turtle race, frog jumping contest and pet show and a livestock show for the 4-H and FFA kids. This year we celebrated 90 years. It is much better than the county fair. The county fair had the stock shows, the exhibits, and the pie cooking contest - and that's about it. And yeah, they are both cheesy.
