Something Different

I'm always seeing ads for CDs of modern "wosrhip" music (and the ads drive me nuts!). I really do dislike that sort of music, probably in large part due to childhood memories of the church my mum used to be mixed up in. So I was glad to see an ad today for classic old hymns. Hymns I actually sing in church no less. It would be a perfect gift for my mum's upcoming birthday too.

This all reminds me that I need to see if I can rescue a cassette I bought at York Minster of the boy's choir there. I love it, but it's getting warped. With the internet these days, I can probably find it somewhere. I hope. And speaking of 'church music', has anyone else ever listened to the CD An English Ladymass by Anonymous 4? It's one of my favourite recordings.

Haven't heard the particular recording you mention, but I agree with you about much of the 'new' Christian music. My church used to have a 'classic' service and a 'contemporary' service. I really disliked the latter. I much prefer classic hymns.

You might be interested in the Air Force choirs' website. They have free mp3 recordings of a number of classic hymns, especially Christmas hymns.

Hey Ith, what questions did you have of my church? :D

I'll find out as much as I can for you.

I'm pretty much a traditionalist, too, where services are involved. No, not "pretty much" - a complete traditionalist.

That's not to say that I don't enjoy the "contemporary Christian" genre -- I just don't think most of it belongs in services.

I'll never forget the day I was visiting my folks and they were experimenting with a "non-traditional" service. Particularly memorable (despite my efforts to the contrary) was the "liturgical dance."

That was the first (and last) time I ever walked out of a church service.

*Keeping mum about my very contemporary church*

I love Anonymous 4 - that is a great CD, but I don't own it. I borrowed my Dad's copy to listen to a few years ago.

Apparently, they broke up last year. Anon 4 that is. But Amazon suggested simailar artists and my wish list expanded!!

I'm with you on the modern "Worship" music. Except for the ones that are actually Scripture set to music I find the lyrics vapid. And eve the Scripture set to music could do with better music.
