For several years now, I've been interested in the racial component of illegal immigration from Mexico. I think the question first surfaced several years ago, after watching a food show that went around Mexico talking to restaurant/resort owners. I remember thinking that almost everyone interviewed appeared of European/Spanish ancestry -- certainly not the same people you see streaming across our border. I began to wonder just what the racial makeup of Mexico was. and how that played into the Mexican government's encouragment of illegal immigration into our country.
Via La Shawn Barber, I discovered this article, which answers many of those questions.

Probably because history doens't seem to be a subject there's much interest in.

Strangely enough all of this is covered in the current history/geography textbooks used in the upper elementary grades. I guess people just don't make the connection between the historical situation and what is going on now.
