So I didn't come back later. Oops.
I did want to say a little bit more about "Finding Neverland" though.
First -- how come the average art house theater goer is always so glum? I suppose they were mostly depressed Kerry supporters. I swear to god the two women in front of us were talking about Thanksgiving being "a holiday about the British infecting the Indians with diseases". I take that back -- I'm sure they were depressed Kerry supporters. Anyway, back to the movie! Johnny Depp was excellent, and I'm sure there's another Academy Award nomination in his near future. The kids in the cast were equally excellent and gave the grownups a run for their money. Definitely bring some Kleenex with you though.
And since its really not "out" yet except in a few cities, click down below for some slightly spoilery stuff....
The movie shifts into "imagination mode" several times, and as I was watching the Cowboys and Indians segment, I realized that the Peter Pan parts, as Barrie is writing it, would be similarly "imagined" visually. I leaned over to Nin and whispered, "If Johnny is Captain Hook in those parts, I'm going to lose it!" Sure enough, Captain Hook! And I wasn't the only one thinking the same thoughts, because the entire audience was laughing. It was a very funny moment.
One of the touches I appreciated was keeping the costumes down to a minimum. Movies seem to always have the female charters in a never ending wardrobe. This movie was realistic in matching the number of outfits to the characters financial standing. Nice for a change.

John and I saw a pre-pre-pre-pre-pre release screening of this movie a couple of years ago. The producers took suggestions from the audience.
Posted by: Beth at November 25, 2004 11:22 AMHappily, it sounds like the suggestions were taken seriously. It was not a very good movie after the first cut, but we could see some possibilities.
