Movies!

I finally saw "Casablanca"!! I've owned the DVD for a while now, but just never seemed to remember it was there. But tonight, all that changed! Realy enjoyed it and was surprised at how much of it I'd already seen over the years in clips.

It's funny, over the past 5-6 years I've seen a lot of movies, but before that I hardly ever went, and wasn't doing the VCR thing either. In particular, most of the classic "best movies" I have never seen. Except, as you say, bits and pieces, clips shown here and there or brief portions seen while clicking through channels.

If someone asks me to list my favorite movies, it's heavily skewed toward more modern, SF, fantasy, romantic comedy stuff with few exceptions.

You're kidding, Ith! One of the classics of the 40s and you've never seen it? "Of all the gin joints in all the cities in the world. She steps into mine!" Well, I am glad that you did sit and enjoy it. The major part of my VHS/DVD collection is from the 40s to the 70s. Mostly in B&W. With much better writing and acting and direction than most of today's ridiculous 'Blockbusters'. Kubrick's 'Dr. Strangelove' was on TCM this afteroon and it was great. As always! Though, I hear from a reliable source, that 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' is supposed to be pretty good too.

What's odd is that I've probably seen more old movies than new ones. Pretty much all I watched as a kid. Not sure how I never got to see Casablanca.

My favourite all time movie is Ghost & Mrs Muir, also loved Wuthering Heights, seen every Abbot & Costello movie umpteen times, Dracula, Frankenstein, Bob Hope movies, Tyrone Power and Errol Flynn swashbucklers, and dozens of movies that are lost in the mists of childhood memories.

Good choices, Ith! Flynn's always been a favorite of mine! I developed my taste for B&W, because we didn't have a color set as a kid. And the local TV station ran movies every night under the title of 'Rawhide Theater', 'Bogart's Best', 'The World Beyond' and 'Thriller!'. Next, you need to explore the 'Noir' genre. Shadowy black and white films. Like 'The Asphatlt Jungle', 'The Big Combo', 'The Postman Always Rings Twice', 'Mildred Pierce', 'The Sweet Smell Of Success' and Bogart in either 'The Big Sleep' or 'The Maltese Falcon'.
