Dixie Chicks Strike Again

I taped the ACM's last night since I watching American Idol and L & O. And that means I can whiz past the ads and the acceptance speechs! Anyway, at one point, I switched over during an ad, and saw the Dixie Chicks were on stage. The camera is on Natalie, and I see her t-shirt, and I see an F, a U, and the mic was in the way of the third letter, and then a K. Boy, did I do a double take!! I've been reading email this morning, and hear that the letter I couldn't see was a T, and that the shirt translated to F*ck You Toby Keith!! What the hell is wrong with that girl? First off, they started trashing Toby long before the Bush bashing incident. I remember last year, after his "red, White, and Blue" song came out, that they had made some not so nice comments about it. So now they're mad that he answered back? And they choose to wear an insulting shirt to throw the tantrum? Can you imagine if Toby Keith wore a similar shirt?

If this is all true -- the shirt meaning -- my fondness for the Chicks has pretty much dissipated. I thought they were stupid before, but hey, they're young, maybe not too bright, but I gave them a mental break. But they obviously won't let this die, and keep throwing gas on the flames. They have only themselves to blame, and frankly, I'm getting tired of their whining.

Update: From an email sent to The Corner "The Chicks were nominated for several awards. When their names were announced for nominations pre-performance, the audience clapped for them.

It was only AFTER the performance, when whatsherface wore the "F*** You Toby Keith" shirt, and their name was read for "Entertainer of the Year," that the audience booed. And, poetically, Toby Keith beat them out for that award.

People might have started to forgive them for the anti-Bush remarks. But picking a fight with reigning country badass Toby Keith has just gotten them totally ostracized from the country community. "

Hey there! Just read on Free Republic where people in Austin 'Freeped' the concert.

The more bloated they become, the bigger the splat.

The Chicks are so f'ng stupid. They just don't know when to let things die. My respect for them is pretty much zilched.

Ah...What would the world be like without the ignorant? It's very funny to me to hear people speaking out so vhelmently against the dixie chicks. They say that they no longer like them because they disagree politically with the girls' statements. Now since you guys are all patriotic, didn't you know that America is "the land of the free"? The truth is you started listening to the dixie chicks because you liked their music, well the musics the same you will just remain in you little conservative boxes forever. Keep on reenforcing the stereotypes mainstream America has against coutry music!

Lara, I think you missed the point of my post. They can't have it both ways. They complain they're being given a hard time, and then the pull another stunt -- the t-shirt -- and then they cry some more.

Yes, they can say whatever they want, but that doesn't mean that their fans/listeners don't have the same freedom to say they think they're full of it. I know a lot of liberals think freedom of speech is only a right for them, but that's wrong, I'm afraid. All of us have the freedom to say what we will, and with that comes the freedom to have to take the flack.

Why do people like you seem to only be able to fling insults? You couldn't make a comment to my post politely stating what you disagree with? It only lessens you, not me. You may want to think about that, and that "mainstream America" is not what you represent. I certainly don't think so. You make your bias and close-mindedness quite evident. Stereotypes? There's some stereotyping going on here, and it's not by me! It may come as a shock to you, but I have more Sara McLachlan CDs than I do Dixie Chicks. Sorry to burst your bubble. You need to get out of your box a little more often, I think.

As the parent of an army lt. who is in Iraq, I have had it with the Dixie Chicks. My family use to be huge Dixie Chicks fans but not anymore. When all of this first started, I thought well this is a free country and people are allowed to have their opinions. Our local radio station has just started playing their music again and it didn't bother me. After the FUTK shirt incident, I have found myself changing radio stations when a Dixie Chick song is played. They are still free to express their opinions. So am I, which I will do by not buying their cd's, not requesting their music to be played on the radio, and by not attending their concerts!

I'm embarrassed that the Dixie Chicks are from the United States!

The Dixie Chicks are fairly typical of the sort
of oilfield trash (trailer trash, if you will)
which proliferates in West Texas. Being talented
pickers and so-so singers makes them lots of loot,
but doesn't confer any class on any of them. As
entertainers, they're pretty skilled. As people,
they're tasteless, ignorant, and hardly worth any
attention. They're only being defiant because - in
West Texas - making money entitiles you to
adulation (and they're not getting any these days).

Dave, what an ignorant comment. Your hurtful comments about West Texans (which are, by the way, baseless) make you no better than the Dixie Chicks.

For the record, I am from Texas. No, I am not embarassed George W. Bush is from Texas. No, I do not hate the Dixie Chicks. Nor do I love them. And no, I certainly do not believe that making money entitles you to adulation.

I, for one, am getting plenty sick and tired of all the Texas-bashing. Imagine for a moment, Dave, that you'd said what you said about black people. Would anyone be questioning that you are an ignorant bigot then?

I can envision seeing a "Where are they now" episode on VH1 about the Dixie Chicks in the not so distant future. It's amusing. They seem to think the first amendment only applies to them. Then the hipocrites get all fiesty about others practicing their first amendment rights back at them. The more they whine, the worse this is going to get for them. This may be the start of an unrecoverable downward spiral into the abyss of has-been performers and celebrities.
